History of Tabernacle Baptist Fellowship Church

Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church was organized January 25, 1973, by Dr. D. G. Burgs, Sr.  The initial meeting was held at the Walls Chapel AME Church with eighty-eight members in attendance.  In the early days, services were held in the gymnasium of Hope Lutheran Church and the Independent Missionary Baptist Association Office Building. The Church flourished in its zeal to proclaim the gospel, develop mature Christians, and seek the lost.

With his God-inspired vision, a “can do” attitude, and faithfulness to God, Pastor Burgs located the present building at 6801 Westover Street.  The members joined him in claiming this building as their permanent home.  God honored their faith and answered their prayers, and in 1974, this building became their home.

The Lord has carried Tabernacle through storms, over mountains, and through valleys.  He has given the church a pastor after his own heart who keeps a direct line of communication with the Lord and who is not afraid to stand in the face of opposition.  Thousands of souls have been saved, and the membership is increasing with faithful and dedicated individuals who desire to experience a relationship with the True and Living God.  We have joyously labored on this corner for the past 37 years, and we are thankful to God for enabling us to persevere through trials and tribulations and to use the challenges we have faced to grow stronger.

Tabernacle Baptist Church is a “Center for caring”.  As recipients of God’s love, the church is compelled to share His love with the lost, the fragile, the spiritually vulnerable, and the needy.  Guided by the Hand of God and the blessings of His grace, Tabernacle began early to address the needs of the community.  The church provided a child care program, housed a medical unit, and provided residency in the Lydia Pittman Fellowship Hall for the homeless.  In 1979, the church began a program to transport nursing home residents who were able to attend Sunday worship to the church.  In September 1991, Pastor Burgs, prompted by the Holy Spirit, organized a “Meal Ministry” within the church. Meals were accompanied with a helping hand to all who were in need of physical, mental, or spiritual comfort and encouragement.  This ministry impacted the community in such a way that on its second anniversary the Meal Ministry was spotlighted on Houston’s Channel 11 evening news.

Teaching, demonstrating and instilling principles of the faith and of life in our young people have always been priorities of this church. From its inception, our church has recognized, rewarded, given opportunity to, and financially supported its young people. Every year in the life of our church, pastor Burgs and Sis Burgs have sponsored, planned, and chaperoned trips for the educational enrichment and joy of the youth.  In 1993, in memory of Sis Lizzie Butler, mother of Sis Willie Mae Burgs, the Lizzie Berry Butler Scholarship Fund was established to commemorate Sis Butler’s love and encouragement to young people and as a means of investing in our children.

In 2004, and in response to the growing Hispanic population in this community, Pastor Burgs started a Hispanic church under the auspices of Tabernacle Baptist Church.  Gran Tabernaculo de Houston. Rev. Isidro Gonzales, Sr., and Rev. Silvester Romero, Sr. served as pastors.

Our faith views problems as projects, obstacles as opportunity, and midnight as a moment before morning. Then, joy comes.  On April 17, 2005, Tabernacle Baptist Church gave birth to Tabernacle Fellowship Church. Through personal triumph and testimony, God inspired Pastor Burgs to expand the vision to the growing community of Pearland, Texas.

On May 15, 2011 our Lord called home our Beloved Pastor of 38 Years Pastor D. G. Burgs, Sr. since His passing His son Pastor D. G. Burgs, Jr., Has assume the mantle of his father and the Tabernacle Baptist Church. As we move into continuing the legacy of Pastor Burgs, Sr., as well as fulfilling our purpose in serving our Lord and His people.
